* Affixed a block of lemon proof stamps to an envelope of seeds for Ruth & Lise.

* Worked on scanning images from Roll 2005.04. Have 13 negatives left to scan.

* Worked on my bio (i think that should count as creative) and much blog stuff.

* The first crochet project — the crochet tote — looks like a tote now. Two of three narrow sides attached to one large side, the other large side will be attached last. About five inches of the handle done, too.

* Figured out how to set up a temporary rig for hanging a backdrop in the living room, where i can catch the afternoon light for photography. Worked on a second MCM photo that can also be a reference photo for painting that is languishing unfinished.

* Started crocheting the silver curling ribbon.

Crafting ideas — making a pair of shoes with crafted uppers from a purchased pair of shoes:
these boots were made for knitting from If the shoe knits. Now, i’d been imagining buying a shoe insert — because the arch support is my concern, making a sole from layers of hempen twine crochet (the final layer sealed with golden gel medium, perhaps).

Dealing with developed film

January 21st, 2006

Lesson 1. The scanner (Epson Perfection 3200 PHOTO) accepts six frames on a strip. Best to initially cut the negatives to six frames each. The first frame does need to be trimmed as close as all the other frames.

I usually use the Silverfast driver, but the recently installed version of Photoshop Elements doesn’t have it in the menu. No problem, i’ll try the Epson driver. Turns out it will automatically recognizes the frames of the 35 mm. So, i reset the driver settings to se what it would do. In “Auto” mode, it thought i had 12 color transparencies. So i switched to pro mode and toggled to b&w film transparencies. It scanned the images in roughly 400 x 300 pixels. I then ran the contact sheet function and produced a fine 8×10 inch sheet.

Lesson 2: For the quick scan of all 12: Black & white film output to 8 bit greyscale, with the “large” thumbnail option, producing 400 x 300 pixel images for contact sheet.

PseudoMonday … runs into a lost week

January 20th, 2006

Ended up sick most of the week

* Cool jewelry findings called “screen findings” on which one can bead. See a href=”http://www.ornamentea.com/ornShop/screens.html”>the vendor Ornamentea. I can imagine Christine doing cross stitch on these!

* picked up Roll2005.04 from Wolf camera and dropped off Roll2005.06.

* Received the Artistamp Album from renmeleon (LMAO2005.07)

* Started Christine’s scarf in the viscose. (CR2006.02)

* Did some crochet at Friday’s debriefing coffee

Rainy rainy Saturday, then Sunny (Sunday, Monday)

January 16th, 2006

* Printed up a “proof” sheet of the MS2006.OAP.Jan stamps and used the rotary perf blade on them. I was inspired by some artistamps at Flickr; but it’s not as nice as the stamp scissors. It is a way that i can distribute them to others…..

* Attached the metal crochet round (Crochet060106wire) to a photo to make a MA2006.CBTI page (MA2006.CBTI.Mar.01 ? I don’t think i’ll do February….)

* Responded to email from Bubble and Squeek (finally)

* Purchased more yarn, Y6 & Y7, spools of multicolored viscose

* Worked up a swatch of the Fiesta viscose [060206: this informs CR2006.02]

* Updated some of my galleries

* Worked on the the migration of this blog and all the grey-cat.com universe to a new host, first time changing in five years or so. Ooof.

Interesting art websites:
* Red Letters: somewhat like PostSecret
* Tokyo Mars’ Teeny Theaters — Gurdonark praised her work today (Saturday)
* Crocheted fiberglass: Fabulous!

Oh, my elbows

January 13th, 2006

* didn’t post a furry Friday. (Better get a MCM lined up!)

* Thursday i started using the pink crochet “thread”? cord? and made the first couple rounds of a heart. Today i finished it and then started doing the same in red wire. The adjustable loop method is not very good in wire. I also think i’ve got a blister and elbow pain from working with the wire. *sigh* But it looks great! I think i understand dc in wire now. Can beads be far behind?

* received PIF crochet hooks — very small steel/thread hooks (Joseta_fugeta)

* received PIF Norwegian paperback pages (Naiviv)

* From Earth Friendly Yarns:

1. … Bamboo, Purple/Lavender, 100 grams, 250 yards, $13.50 USD

Thinking about Valentines…

January 10th, 2006

* received digital documentation from renmeleon for LMAO2005.07, Artistamp Album.

* received a few more Zig photo markers — these from Mister Art. Quite the set. Now what?

* crocheted hearts based on the first couple of rounds in Gwen Blakely Kinser’s pattern (Encyclopedia of Crochet, p 112). Substituted the adjustable ring as the base. Now that i have the idea, i think i can almost do it by feel. The larger heart had the third ring done by feel….

Notes on reading Crochet Me back issues:

* Reading Oct Nov 2004 of Crochet Me

– how much yarn have i used? Weigh the piece (from Annette Petavy’s article on scarves)

– Technique: a square crocheted in the round – Annette Petavy

Kitty Cat Hat: 3oz. sport weight yarn, grey and a small amount of pink. Model uses Lion Brand Micro Spun.

Artisans Traveling Hat: two color work, medium hat. Two skeins of at least 114 yards of 1034 yds/lb yarn. (Sport weight?) Pattern for wool. (Pattern states 1 skein primary color (114 yds / 50 g ), 1 skein secondary color (245 yds / 100 g) but looking at the hat i bet there was *lots* of the secondary color left over.)

* Reading Dec Jan 2004-05 of Crochet Me (But this somehow spilled into the current issue — argh)

– 200 Crochet Blocks for Blankets, Throws, and Afghans by Jan Eaton, recommended as a good, detailed reference for the crochet geek. Added to Amazon list.

– Knit and Crochet with Beads by Lily M. Chin Sounds good, but amazon reviewer says, “75% knit and 25% crochet” But it sounds very technique-oriented.

– 300 Crochet Stitches book, by the Harmony Guides. (When i get bored with my encyclopedia)

Swirl sweater and technique. 4 skeins of (665 yards per 8 oz skein) Christine – a red, black, and greys.

– idea for Zain, make slippers with a loopy stitch and add claws to make Abominable Slippers This pattern is for younger kids.

Artistamp for January

January 8th, 2006

I completed my Omnibus Artistamp Project submission for the theme, “Come to your SENSES.” I’m sending in the one with the 200 denomination. They’re all visible at Flickr for the time being.

The Meyer Lemon is a call to sensual awakening. The bright yellow fruit attracts the eye. The hand reaches out to touch the cool, smooth skin of the fruit, the snap as the fruit is pulled from the tree, the first hint of the sweet sharp scent . A knife to the peel, carefully cutting just the zest, releases a dance of yellow, a spray of oils with a quiet gasp, the bouquet. The Meyer lemon is sweeter than a Persian lemon, the juice bringing me cheer and comfort mixed in fresh water.

This image began with a digital photo of a lemon on my tree, taken with silver mylar reflected sunlight and a white back board. A number of photoshop filters were applied to create an appearance of etching and simple printing requirements.

Pages for January

January 8th, 2006

Pages prepared for the Chunky Book Tip-In

MA2006.CBTI.Jan.01: Pine. A photo of a pine tree (probably Christine’s, from the photo drawer), vintage green velvet ribbon with gold back, cut into narrow strips and crocheted around the photo. Slip-stitched to a pale blue card stock margin for binding. Once i scanned it in, i added cork stamping along the card-stock margin in yellow and green.

Email sent to sf-artpals in “repsonse” to a spam message, subject “I’ve found my perfect match!”

I thought, oooh! Someone’s either got a sweetie who’s keeping them busy -OR- they’ve found the perfect creative medium. Must read!

Piddle.

So here’s a real post in belated response to Ruth’s invitation that we fess up to what we’ve been up to. For me, mail art and — as of Dec 24 — crochet.

http://www.grey-cat.net/elainephotos/JEB-CrochetProcess2006.shtml

I’ve been fascinated by the process of crochet, excited by a continual sting of exclamatory thoughts, “I could crochet *that*! I could crochet *that*!” So i’ve crocheted curling ribbon, wire, and the plastic film of the dry cleaning bag. As well as yarn. Beading will happen soon. And my sister is sending my hair from the tail of our ancient Morgan horse.

My sweetie has taken up cross stitch, and she gifted me with a great telephoto zoom lens for my film camera.

Mail art wise, i’m participating in a “chunky book” tip in swap in the new nervousness forums, and an artistamp omnibus project. I don’t know whether i will persist in those monthly endeavors: on one hand they take me away from larger projects by having deadlines. On the other hand, the small scale plus deadline forces an invention that is, i suspect, good for me.

No perfection, but a lot of fun. Must get back to the easel. An underpainting has been sitting there since summer waiting for me to commit color.

Cheers,

judith

Crochet madness

January 6th, 2006

This is for both yesterday & today.

Yesterday, we went to Michael’s after work. I picked up two large skeins of Heart yarn in claret (a red) and aran (off-white), a set of steel hooks, and two balls of crochet cotton thread: DMC Traditions, size 10, in ecru and Royale Fashion, size 3 in warm rose. At home i worked a sample swatch in the claret and aran, experimenting with carrying the yarn over and alternating color all in single crochet.

This morning i wrote up my notes about the swatch. When i came home, the wire from eBay had arrived. I promptly made a disk in the metallic orange and nest a couple perodite-green glass beads in the center. Lovely! A little later i tried making the Irish rose pattern in the metallic red wire. I don’t think it’s anything like the instruction. Perhaps i’ll try the rose again in the rose thread.
