Rising Waters Pendant

I have very mixed feelings about this piece. It’s made with vintage beading wire i bought on eBay. The steel wire is wrapped with a metallic foil of some sort that easily tears off on the edge of the glass beads and the crochet hook. Yet, i’m not at the point where i feel like making experimental crochet wire jewelry with gold wire or even gold plate on copper. (Or even silver.)

On the other hand, using the less precious, quasi-recycled metal appeals in the context of the recycled glass beads because, as i’ve had to admit to myself: they’re not very elegant beads. (From the Beads & Pieces order.)

I also made some looped wire for filling in with acrylic paint to make the “stained glass” look earrings, and strung up the “coral” beads with black seed beads between. Christine liked the colors, so I gave her the necklace and a set of earrings; a second set of earrings i’ve made for the Harvest festival.

The first of two photos to document my initial effort in creating a focal pendant with a CD etched and edge sanded with a dremmel.

It is interesting enough to keep me interested, but it’s much harder to work with than i expected. (I was not very realistic, really.)

The veining isn’t as finished as i’d like — it looks more careless? rough? than I’d like.

I haven’t been focussed on creative efforts recently, but last Monday i found myself making a little cover for section from a block of brightly colored post-its with a very brightly 3×5 card and some … rivets? I’ve forgotten the proper name for these. I didn’t quite get the cover’s strap on in a user friendly manner; it flops around quite a bit when open. But it’s good enough for protecting the pages from the rough and tumble of my desk.

James Fitzgerald Marine Reserve

Originally uploaded by Elaine with Grey Cats.

I visited this marine reserve with my sister Laura on March 4 of this year. We hadn’t picked a particular time, and we arrived in the late afternoon. We saw seals playing out near where waves were breaking over rocks and picked up colorful bits of seaweed to arrange for photographs. Bay Nature recently ran a story on the park and the tidepools, and with the nearly full moon this weekend was a great one for some very low tides.

This morning Christine and i arrived at the reserve a couple hours after a -1 ft low tide, just fifteen minutes after sunrise. It was dramatically different.

I shot up the remaining black and white (from our Yosemite trip?), switching to the telephoto to shoot the seals out on the rocks. No tripod, Kodak TMAX 100 (TMX 135-36) speed film, dawn. I’ve no great hopes. [This will be Roll2006.06] Eventually i switched to 200 speed antique color film i bought on eBay at least three years ago. (Kodak Select Royal Gold 200, 24 exp) [This will be Roll2006.07] The dawn light was filtered by the marine layer, so colors were muddied. I fiddled with my circular polarizer as well, but that eats light, too.

The main joy was to watch the darting of the small fish, the tide pool sculpins. There were some lovely giant green sea anemone and the notable aggregating anemone, clonal colonies apparently battle each other. I didn’t see any examples of large colony boundaries, though. Hermit crabs were easily apparent, but i didn’t see any starfish or sea urchins. (I did see a lovely bit of sea urchin shell.)

The seaweeds were the delight — i wish i had a better guide. There were bulbulous bright green clusters that were quite interested even when out of the water.

The deck before the Saturday cleaning

The deck before the Saturday cleaning

Originally uploaded by Elaine with Grey Cats.

Saturday, I got the deck cleaned for the first time in a long while — although i hope it’s been since the news of the OCLC “combination.” I took a before photo, but nor a similar after. Actually, the main improvement was cleaning up the fallen bird seed shells, which would not particularly stand out in the photo.

I’ve pondered getting plant racks that i could put against the screen/glass door that we don’t use. I’m glad I haven’t, because we’ve been keeping the bikes on the deck since the neighborhood cleaned derelict bikes off the bike racks. Ever since, i’ve pondered that the bikes are safer, particularly in an earthquake, on our deck. And, hey, i guess my arms are getting a work out.

So this looks useful — and i bet i’d have better luck with plants that need more sun: veggies. Adjustable Flower Pot Rail Rack — ~$17

This versatile rack expands to 24″L, accommodating a variety of flower pots. Brackets adjusts from 3 1/2″ to 6″W, fitting most any balcony or deck railing. Designed in green steel, it’s a handsome backdrop to any floral display. 14 1/2″L x 4″H x 10 1/2″D.

Crochet Me Summer 2006 Issue

June 24th, 2006

Patterns that caught my eye: Crochet “traveling bags” and a sort of cloche-like hat.

The article on neck laces was inspirational, (provoking some more thoughts about the leaf chain pattern from Fable*Handmade Goods).

Dreaming of the future i read Amy O’Neill Houck’s article about the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival: “The animals that completely captivated me on Sunday were the Angora bunnies. Maybe it’s because they seemed the most domesticated – almost like cats. They sat peacefully on their owners’ laps. They eagerly received pets from children, and they were just so soft. I learned, much to my surprise, that an Angora rabbit is the only animal whose wool can be spun directly off the animal…. Angora wool grows at the breakneck pace of an inch a month. They’re ready for spinning every 3 months. And because the wool just falls off, there’s no need to shear them. The spinner just gently pulls off the clumps. This also saves the bunny from icky hairball problems. So, it’s a win-win.”

Crochet Project Ideas and Patterns

June 18th, 2006

Fable*Handmade Goods sent a newsletter around announcing new patterns at her site. I hadn’t noticed the great leaf chain before.

This seemed like as good a time as any to post this list of ideas that have been slowly accumulating. I’m not sure when i’ll get to them, even though Eliza got me some great superwash brown sheep wool yarn to make toys. The baby blanket really needs some progress!

A Raccoon set:

Adapt the Lion Around nose (dark bridge/top of nose, light surround, black nose tip), use Incognito Me around the eyes and for the hat, and ears from the Kitty Cat Hat.

Bug Mittens: Eliza has a link to the knitting book.. And she has a stash. I now have a stash of decorative bits — enough to embroider bits on — but not so much for making a whole mitten, even for my three year old nephew. (I should just buy yarn for a gift for him, anyhow, and make bug mittens and a critter hat, and critter hats for his ‘rents.)

Slippers: http://www.crochetme.com/frolicking — there’s a comment about adding a jute sole. I thought of that, too! (And making it a pocket, so i can slip in arch support)
