Painting last night

Thursday, February 17th, 2005

The irridescence due to the metallic undercoat is not well rendered by the scan. If you have an LCD screen you could tilt it right and left — but it’s still not the same. I’m not sure i like the composition, and i may add more paint. The other work from last night is on the right below.

Activity Notes

Thursday, February 17th, 2005

I scanned in in two “works” from last year, and almost got distracted by a driver malfunction. (Fortunately the silverfast driver was still working even if the Epson is not.) One of the two works is something i did on All Hallows. It needs completing, but i don’t know quite how i want to complete it. It’s supposed to evoke the archtypical mother kneeling and reaching out, in a dark landscape. The other was red & blue “waves”. I didn’t think there’d be much reason to scan in the dark stainless steel and gold ground because i didn’t think the scanner would be able to pick up the metallic highlights very well.

Last night i worked on the waves and the metallic under painting, just scribbling really, with the paints fairly translucent.

Bulbs & Compost

Saturday, February 5th, 2005

There was something jubulant about the day today. I took the window boxes i’d bought and emptied the bottom of my compost pail into them. My what gorgeous dark earth has formed in my compost bucket!!

So, in one windowbox i planted the amaryllis and narcissus bulbs i bought during Twelfth Month. Just a little action, but it felt good.

Amaryllis bulb bought at SF Flower mart, early Dec. Red. Bloom-Rite Gardens, Half Moon Bay, CA. Expect bloom 6-8 weeks.

Casting Metal in a Microwave

Tuesday, January 25th, 2005

This is so utterly cool. I expect that in less than a decade one will be able to buy specific kits through art suppliers.

The first part of this Foundry Note describes a technique for using a domestic microwave oven to melt and cast, to accurate shape, small quantities (up to a quarter of a kilo) of bronze, silver, white metal or iron. The technique has been used to cast pieces from ceramic shell moulds up to about 18cm high, and is an accessible alternative to other small-scale melting set-ups, for example the flask casting of jewellery.

Happy New Year

Friday, December 31st, 2004

We spread supplies out all over the living room floor — papers and ink pads and glue sticks and sealing wax…. On our anniversary we purchased Nick Bantock’s Urgent Second Class, a collection of rubber chop stamps, and a collection of magnetic refrigerator poetry rubber stamps, and ink pads. (We had to go to the mall for our anniversary so i could visit the Apple Store with my sick mac. We made the best of being in the hallowed halls of commerce days before Christmas.)

I carved a pink pearl eraser into a 2005 stamp. I discovered my cache of wine corks and started carving those, too. A circle, a Maltese cross, and two different cats. X got into the collaging spirit, and found my modpodge.

It was a joy. Perfect way to fram our mindset for 2005.

I’m excited about the cork stamps, then i found a photo in someone else’s blog (I want an entire tray filled with inky, dirty cork stamps.) and feel twice as inspired now. Suddenly i’ve tons of ideas….
