Tenthmonth Challenge: ArtSoMoFo

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

Thanks to LiveJournal’s new “consumer” use of OpenID, i feel i can “join” a community there (although apparently i can only “watch” and comment by LJ’s definition.) The community — and challenge — is artsomofo: a challenge to “art something” every day in October. The past ten days or so, i’ve been plowing through all the ephemera and scraps i’ve been collecting as part of a “discover my desk, oh, and there must be a floor, too” activities. now that the workspace is available — using it seems like a good next step. I’m a little intimidated by the posting requirement. It seems documenting creations can take as long as the creative act itself. And i have to admit that the prep i’ll do in Ninthmonth is not preparing art surfaces so much as trying to catch up on filing.

Still, a challenge!

For the curious, here’s my new LJ profile.

Another opportunity for writers, this in the SF Bay Area

Sunday, April 15th, 2007

At Foothill, where I have been taking geography courses the past three quarters, there is a summer writers conference. I’ve been thinking more about writing lately, but i think this summer will be occupied with plenty of digital-creativity events. I imagine i will not need another event, and don’t think i can pull my (digital) scribbles together before then. The conference looks like it would be wonderfully welcoming though, so i’ve put a reminder in my calendar to check next year.

The Beat Museum and the 2007 Poetry contest

Saturday, April 14th, 2007

Write? Formal or fast fiction, experimental or experienced, poems no longer than three double spaced ages long are welcome to the contest. There is a $5 for one/$10 for three reading fee; since visiting the Beat Museum, i feel supporting their efforts, which include taking the story of the Beats to schools and colleges, is well worth it.

See the Contest Rules for more details. The January and February winners are posted.

MA2006.04: Américas Altered Datebook — UPDATED

I’ve followed up on the nervousness replies to date and updated the PawPrints Page for the project.

MA2006.04: Américas Altered Datebook

Saturday, May 20th, 2006

Updated: 2006-08-04

This is a deco or a traveling journal form of Land Mail Art Object (LMAO), also announced at Nervousness. You don’t have to participate at nervousness to take a turn on this altered object, but Nervousness is always encouraged!

I have a datebook from the Organization of American States, published on glossy/coated, magazine-weight paper and wire bound. I have reinforced the covers with thin clear plastic and added an oversized cardboard insert to protect the edges.

I would like to pass it around to people who live in the Américas to collage over the calendar pages with images (created by the artist or from travel information, maps, and other ephemera) about where they live, to complement the photos already present.

The final object I will pass to a elementary school teacher to share with students. I’m not sure at the moment what the documentation of the object would be beyond scans and posts, but i’ll be thinking about it.

I’d like to not repeat states/provinces within different countries on the two continents. Once i get an initial group of five, I’ll send it off.

Participants

1. Genevieve: Québec, Canada [sent to, 2006-05-30; arrived at, 2006-06-09; sent on, 2006-06-30]
2. Etayne: Tennessee, USA [arrived: 2006-07-60]
3. thirty: West Virginia, USA
4. rubberbum: Oregon
5. Judielaine: California, USA

6. seashell: North Carolina
7. thursday: Arizona
8. sibyl: Montana

Technical Notes & Instructions

Please choose a calendar page close to the month and day in which you alter the book. If you live in the USA, please only choose one week. Elsewhere, feel welcome to choose a two week spread.

Pages are 9 inches by 6.5 inches with 3/8ths of an inch for binding.

Single week pages: 19
Spreads (two weeks): 17

If you would like to add an insert, you may, by using the hole punch template and then cutting a slit from the edge to the hole. This can then be carefully slipped over the wire bindings. Do keep in mind that other artists will be adding materials!

Feel free to use images that are clipped from chamber of commerce or travel information or maps, but use of your own images is preferred! Feel free to use the calendar slots and simply journal about your area. You’re welcome to write in whatever language is comfortable for you.

If you need postage help to send this to the next person in the list, please let me know, and i’ll help.

Planned inclusions

I’ll be printing maps of North, South, and Central America to include with the map section.

I’ll also include a table of contents in the front, listing artists and locations.

Chunky Book Tip-Ins – MA2006.CBTI

Tuesday, December 27th, 2005

A call at Nervousness by Pequad: Five 4″x4″ original pages, open theme, January through June (recommit each month). All media is welcome, provided that you add some sort of hand embellishment to each page.

Pages will be due in my mailbox by the 15th of each month.

* Include, also, $1 + a self addressed mailing label.
* Please send in a padded mailer that I can reuse to mail your returns.
* It would be helpful, but not required, if you would enclose your pages in a ziploc sandwich baggie.

Returns will be mailed on the 20th of each month. (Five pages by others!)

* ORIGINAL work, no copied pages please

* PLEASE leave a 1 1/2″ margin free of thick or dimensional embellishment on the LEFT side of the page, …. A margin of 1/4 inch is required for the actual binding holes, so no embellishment at all AND NOTHING STICKY like glue or mounting tape.

* PLEASE use sturdy paper! … No construction paper, please. …avoid using glue sticks as the adhesive breaks down over time.

* PLEASE do not send sticky pages! …

* PLEASE do not leave your page backs blank!…do add a bit of color (paint, a doodle, a stamped image, a bit of scrapbook paper, etc.) along with your name & any contact info that you want to provide.

* And finally PLEASE SEND ONLY WORK THAT YOU’D BE HAPPY TO RECEIVE!
