Palm Pre & Me Research
My Treo is quite satisfactory, with a slight frustration about the note taking model (limited number of classifications, no interlinking). The phone is also wearing out. Our two year contract is up in September, and that’s made me look longingly at the Pre.
Following are notes for me to keep updating over the release of the Pre as news comes out.
Last update 2009-06-05.
Background: My PDA/PIM needs are currently addressed with a
* a Palm Treo
* a MacBook Pro
** Missing Sync’s Notebook
** Mac Address Book
** iCal
** I also sync call log, SMS log, video & photos.
* Missing Sync for Palm to sync the Treo & Mac applications
* a .me account
** occasional syncing of address book, iCal makes that data web available
*** also available via Plaxo
** WebDAV disk space, mirrored and synced from Macbook Pro
I know i’m already “on the cloud” with the .me accounts and plaxo. The “it’s in the cloud” solution annoys me to no end. If i want to manage battery life, i’m off-line. If i’m in a rural place, i may be off-line. I don’t want to rely on being on-line, and i don’t want to have to use Google as a sync conduit.
QUESTION: does the Palm Pre dynamically call the web when you want to look at contacts or does it sync? If it syncs, does it sync with .me?
See comment below: There is a Missing Sync (yay) [2009-06-11]
QUESTION: regarding the rumored iTunes sync: will it pick up address book & calendar data?
I’m not completely satisfied with my note taking on the Treo. Evernote is tempting: it’s more cloud though (although it seems to have a mirror mode). And it’s not clear to me it resolves the issues of interlinking between notes that i would want.
QUESTION: can i install a wiki or mind map like ap on the Pre and have it sync with the MacBook?
QUESTION: is Mark/Space going to have a tool for syncing?
Yes!!
QUESTION: is there a way to get Memos synced elsewhere? [2009-06-11]
Argh, it looks like the Memos app is near useless. Apparently there is the option of “Documents to Go” – “Documents to Go viewers; Documents to Go with full editing is optional.” And Missing sync will sync documents.

Note: monthly for Simply EverythingSM Family is $189.98 (wow)
monthly for Everything Data Family is $169 for two lines (better!)
Options i’ve thought about:
* iPod does allow syncing with address book, calendar via iTunes. So, it can be an off-cloud mobile PIM.
* A netbook like EeePC 901 (model has best combination of features for me in the Eee line), running linux, or, in a few more months, running Android
** Wouldn’t have the wireless access the Treo has via phone network unless i got a aircard. (Presumably the cost would be offset by not having a data plan on the phone.)
** SMS, not so much.
* Plaxo syncs across computers, Windows and Apple, particularly. For $60/year, sync with windows mobile. — 090605
* Evernote $45/year buys ssl (and more storage) — 090605
Other Phones
* Symbian phones, including Nokia Eseries, have a Missing Sync, but does not have Notebook sync … but do have “View and edit Word, Excel and PDF files from Mac on your Nokia phone with applications like QuickOffice and Adobe Reader LE.”
** Nokia Nseries does not seem to have the full keyboard
** Possibly write notes in email? (ugh)
* Nokia phones have a specific Missing Sync that works with Yojimbo!
** Nokia E71 sounds particularly wonderful.
* Nokia 6820 GSM TriBand Color Camera Phone (and other 682X phones)
** not listed at the Missing Sync, but possibly a Symbian phone?
** interesting landscape typing mode
