@librarylaw urged that one Take 5 minutes to add your comments to Google privacy requirements deadline May 2 #privacy #google #ftc #epic. The form at Electronic Privacy Information Center (”EPIC”) notes that, “The FTC is seeking public comment on its proposed Agreement with Google regarding Google Buzz, and EPIC wants your voice to be heard! Use the form below to help build your comments. EPIC will send your comments and information to the FTC and use them to help us write our own comprehensive recommendations to the FTC.”

I was struck by the fact that there was likely a large overlap in the concerns covered in this agreement and in the December 2010 FTC White Paper: Protecting Consumer Privacy in an Era of Rapid Change, A Proposed Business and Policy Framework [PDF].

I’d heard about the white paper from Kaliya Hamlin and Mary Hodder, executive director and chairman, respectively, of the Personal Data Ecosystem Collaborative Consortium (PDECC) at a She’s Geeky session in late January. They were writing a response to that white paper, I’d added my comments to their response and my name as a signer. (A nice review of their response, if you don’t want to read the 33 pages, is at “Conversational Commerce Update: End-user Advocates Set FTC Straight on Personal Data Ecosystem.”

My response to the FTC is after the cut. I spent more than the five minutes @LibraryLaw recommended, but that’s because i didn’t use EPIC’s form.

There’s enough time that perhaps the Personal Data Ecosystem Collaborative Consortium (PDECC) can get in a formal response to the FTC as well. (Now Mary has practice using the document upload function!)

To the FTC,

I am submitting this comment on the proposed consent order, In the Matter of Google Inc., File No. 1023136, between the FTC and Google. The consent order comes as a result of the complaint filed by the Electronic Privacy Information Center (”EPIC”) regarding the privacy breach to Gmail users caused by Google Buzz.

The Personal Data Ecosystem Consortium, a community of technology innovators and end user advocates has prepared a response to your December 2010 FTC White Paper: __Protecting Consumer Privacy in an Era of Rapid Change, A Proposed Business and Policy Framework__. The comment to that white paper was received at by the FTC and noted at http://www.ftc.gov/os/comments/privacyreportframework/00472.html

Any FTC settlement agreement with Google over privacy issues from the Google Buzz launch should be in alignment with the larger plans to protect consumer privacy. Please consider the comments of Personal Data Ecosystem Consortium in relation to this specific case. I’ll list some points from the response and specific points of relevancy with this agreement below:

* People are the Only Ethical Integration Point for Disparate Data Sets: Individuals should be able to decide how to integrate data sets Google (and any other provider) collects about them over disparate services. For example, a person should be able to choose whether or not their Google Talk history should be associated with Buzz — similarly, they should be able to export their AOL IM history in a manner that Google could use to support Buzz if they wish.

* Service Providers Must Work For the End-User: Google must use open standards when collecting data about users and exporting that data back to users for users to employ as they see fit.

* Personal Data should be treated like Personal Money. — Thus Google should encrypt their cloud-based service, and never disclose that data without a user’s consent, except to law enforcement when served with a proper warrant.

* Consumers need to be able to to Collect and Aggregate Their Data from Product and Service Providers: For example, SMS and instant messaging histories could be aggregated from different providers by a user and then provided to a service which could estimate the most effective way to communicate with specific persons (Friend A is on the same cell provider, so cell to cell calls are “free,” Friend B has a IM account which is cheaper than the SMS account texts). This also means that if a user wants to keep their data history, they should be able to allow a service like Google to persist their history in some way. Conversely, they should also be able to indicate that they want their data collection limited to the shortest time possible.

Thank you for your attention,

Judith Bush

In February i joined with a hundred Friends (Quakers) and friends at a retreat center in North Carolina. It was my second time attending this community in person, a community i’ve participated in through a mailing list for three years or so.

I participate in the Society of Friends both because it feels like coming home and because it stretches and transforms me as i learn how to be with community.

It is a tradition among Friends that when we gather, we share that community’s experience with others through a letter. Below the cut is the letter from the February Gathering, also posted at the FLGBTQC website.

An Epistle from Friends for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Concerns
Midwinter Gathering 2011

To All Friends Everywhere,

We send you love from Friends for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Concerns Midwinter Gathering, held from February 18-21st, 2011 in Browns Summit, North Carolina.

There was a time when we could not say our name. We dared not say our name — even in the Religious Society of Friends. We were the Committee of Concern. This community has grown up around the concept of “radical inclusion” — the willingness to welcome new and different kinds of people into our community even when we had not expected them, recognizing the expansion of our understanding of who we are as a form of continuing revelation. Some of those who helped form this community continue to actively be a part of our community, for which we are blessed. Others have moved on. Still others have passed on. Yet all these Friends are still very much with us, standing in their own integrity, and calling us into our own.

We came together once again to witness to the power of radical love and radical inclusion to transform and sustain us spiritually — both individually and as a community and to discern how we are called to deepen our commitment to that call. Framed by our theme, “Reclaiming our Past; Proclaiming our Future,” we heard stories of what happens when we do this well. When we are faithful, we recognize that love is a practice, that in relationship we reveal and discover our true selves. We share the stories and truth emerging from our lives; when needed, we say to one another, “You’re standing on my foot! Please get off!” And then we talk about it. We experience the gifts of receiving and giving love that is shaped by the quirks and flavors of each of our individual essences; in so doing, we invite each other into wholeness, greater integrity, a fuller understanding of who we are as a community, and even greater integrity, and thus the cycle begins again.

As we shared our truths with one another in worship, Spirit revealed to and through us how wholeness, community, love, and integrity are intimately intertwined with each other. As one Friend said, “With Quakers, I cannot lie about who I am.” He spoke about how Friends from this community “kicked me out of the closet” – not through violence, but through holding him to a higher standard of integrity and by loving him for exactly who he is. Another Friend gazed into the eyes of each speaker on a panel of our elders, expressing how she could feel the flavor of each life moving through her, transforming her. A third urged that in an unsafe and sometimes hostile world, we must nevertheless go cheerfully where we are led, understanding that only as we bring our full selves forward can we make the world safer for those who will follow. A fourth speaker, an attender for whom this gathering was hir* first experience of Quakerism, spoke powerfully at the end of the gathering of how way had opened for hir* to be here, and a sense of how “I am supposed to be where I am right now. Life is overwhelming but I can do it.” Young and young adult Friends spoke deeply of the condition of a continuum of sexual and gender identities and the urgent necessity of a place of full and unconditional love and acceptance to call forth one’s true self. They spoke of the blessing of a safe space where they could be fully known, of the feeling that FLGBTQC was a place where there was no “card check,” where all were welcome, warts and all, where they could bring their whole selves forward.

We also know our own stories of the pain it inflicts when radical love and inclusion are absent — experienced within this community and others. We know that we have work to do to more faithfully practice radical love and inclusion with people of color and Young Adult Friends and Young Friends, and those who may yearn for but not be aware of or have access to our community.

We ask for the prayers of all Friends everywhere as we do our work, and we ask you, as way opens, to support us and join with us in our struggle. We offer you our unfolding witness and testimony to the power of radical love and inclusion in this community and an invitation to join in this experience at gatherings in the future. Co-clerks can be reached via telephone at 267-270-2315 or email at flgbtqc@gmail.com. Our website is flgbtqc.quaker.org.

On behalf of Friends for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer Concerns,

Deborah Fisch, Co-Clerk

Kody Hersh, Co-Clerk

* Many people who identify as neither men nor women prefer to be referred to by non-gendered pronouns, and this attender is among those people. The word “hir” in this case is grammatically equivalent to “her” as the possessive (”this is hir [item]“) and object form (”I gave it to hir”) but carries no connotation of a female or male gender.

My December news work is on a list with thank you notes, new years cards, and a variety of financial changes for the new year. I’ll promptly pass on this notice on behalf of the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society. They note some decisions that will be made soon. The meetings of interest are in Cupertino:

Parks and Recreation Commission (This is expected to be a relatively short meeting)

Community Hall, 10350 Torre Avenue, Cupertino
Cupertino City Council (This is expected to be a very long meeting)

After the cut, the background and talking points from the Santa Clara Valley Audubon Society:

What’s Happening

In the next couple of weeks, the City of Cupertino will make an important decision about the future of Stevens Creek’s restoration.

The City was awarded a $1.2 million government grant for the implementation of Phase II of the Stevens Creek Park project, including the restoration of the creek section between Blackberry Farm and Stevens Creek Boulevard. Additional funding is likely to be allocated by the Santa Clara Valley Water District and other sources, for a total of $2.7 million. Most of this funding will be available only if the creek is restored to remove crumbling concrete banks and to create enhanced habitat for wildlife.

The City staff proposed several options that would extend the Stevens Creek Trail through this section, but may or may not restore the creek. Alternative 4A is the most cost-effective, and the best from a biological perspective. Implementation of Alternative 4A would require the City of Cupertino to allocate $800,000 and would require that the golf course be closed for several months at an additional cost to the City.

In a staff report prepared for Cupertino’s Parks and Recreation commission, the Department’s Director Mark Linder recommended that the commission endorse an alternative that would not impact the golf course. If this recommendation is adopted, Stevens Creek may never be restored.

Why This Is Important

Phase I of the Stevens Creek Park project, the restoration of the creek at Blackberry Farm, is widely touted as a model for great urban stream restoration projects. The project recreated a lively ecosystem: aquatic insects and trout thrive in pools and riffles that were formed to enhance aquatic habitat in the widened creek. Old Western Sycamores were preserved and provide shade and home to birds and bats. Over 6,000 native plants were strategically placed to create a riparian woodland and meadow that are enjoyed by both wildlife and people.

The creek flows downhill from Blackberry Farm and separates the golf course from the Stocklmeir orchard. Sycamores line parts of the creek channel, but on the golf course side, concrete banks prevent any vegetation from growing. Alternative 4A would widen the creek channel, removing the concrete and restoring the aquatic and riparian habitats. This would preserve the sycamores and most of the fruit trees in the orchard. The channel would encroach 35 feet onto the golf course, but City staff estimates that redesigning the course would not harm its function.

Talking Points

Praise the City of Cupertino for its commitment to the restoration of Stevens Creek and its successful implementation at Blackberry Farm. Explain how important it is to continue the project both as a local Cupertino Park and as a model for step-by-step creek restoration.

Congratulate the City of Cupertino for securing a $1.2 million government grant: good for the creek, good for the local economy and job creation. The grant was very competitive, and winning it for Stevens Creek shows the importance of the project on a regional and state level.

Encourage the City to focus on the long-term benefits of the project for the community and the region. Ask the City not to allow one-year difficulties to stand in the way of environmental stewardship and quality of life for the community.

Encourage the City to accept all available grants and to proceed with the restoration of Stevens Creek.

Encourage the City to adopt Alternative 4A, removing the concrete along the banks of Stevens Creek at the golf course, and widening the creek.

Request that the City not approve the extension of the Stevens Creek Trail as a stand-alone project. Explain that the creek is the backbone of the ecosystem, and its restoration should be the first step in enhancing the biological and human environment. Furthermore, restoring the creek first is likely to increase the probability of getting grants for trail construction.

Gurmeet Singh Manku, computer science researcher at Stanford keeps track of his area hikes, and he reported on Upper Stevens Creek Country Park at the beginning of November. At the other end of the month and the other end of the creek is an “Urban Outings” story presented by Greenbelt Alliance in the San Francisco Chronicle. This story described the Stevens Creek Shoreline Nature Study Area.

Flood control on Permanente Creek

The water district is hosting a second series of “design workshops” on its Permanente Creek Flood Protection project and reported in the Mercury News.

Information in the flyers from the Water District about this effort, part of the Clean, Safe Creeks and Natural Flood Protection Plan, included:

Please join the Santa Clara Valley Water District for a second round of design workshops regarding a flood detention area at McKelvey Park, Cuesta Park Annex and Blach School. Each meeting will focus on one proposed detention area. …. The purpose of these meetings is to update interested members of the public on revisions made to the conceptual site design based on feedback received at the initial design workshops held in September 2010. Staff from the water district design team will provide a current project overview and solicit further public input.

…. The flood detention area would capture peak flood flows that would currently overtop the creek banks during heavy rainstorms. The flood waters captured at the height of the storm runoff would be later released back into the creek and the park features would be restored once waters have receded.

The Permanente Creek Flood Protection project area includes nearly 11 miles of Permanente Creek starting in the foothills above Cupertino and continuing through the cities of Los Altos and Mountain View. The project goals are to protect at least 1,664 properties from a major flood, improve riparian habitat and provide opportunities for trails or other recreational uses.

The Los Altos Crier and Mercury News reported on the neighborhood response during the Blach School design workshop.

Trails

The city of Mountain View posted this update about the Permanete Creek Trail construction:

The City is proceeding with a project to extend the Permanente Creek Trail from its current terminus on the north (Bay) side of Highway 101 to the south side of Old Middlefield Way by constructing a pedestrian/bicycle crossing over Highway 101 and a tunnel under Old Middlefield Way.

The City awarded a construction contract in October 2010 and expects to begin construction in December 2010 and be completed in early 2012. Additional notices of the project schedule and construction-related impacts will be provided to area residents and businesses during construction. For more information, call the Public Works Department at (650) 903-6311.

Charles Freeman’s thesis is that the theological orthodoxy of the trinitarian principles as decided at the Council of Nicea was not a revelation of truth from divine sources but was established by the imperial order of Theodosius. The historical account of the politics that drove the Church during this period is stomach turning, as politics and power take their place in the structure of the Christian establishment, and heresies are defined as those theologies that do not fall in line with imperial edict. (Some of these heresies are ones Barclay claimed Friends did not espouse: this provides an interesting insight into the historical origin of those heresies.)

The definition of a truth by edict and the enforcement of belief in that truth sets the Church in opposition to the intellectual heritage of Greek thought and a culture of religious diversity. As Nicean theology is established by edict, the intellectual debate is crushed before a resolution found. For a millennia, theology — even Protestant theology — is limited. In one of the final chapters, Freeman discusses the logician Abelard’s attempt to structure a frame for the trinitarian theology and how his attempts slip into the defined heresies, more due to the challenge applying rigorous thought to the theology than due to a desire to challenge it. Because logic and reason fail to underpin the Nicean theology, logic and reason become suspect and this sets up the apparent contradictions of religion and science.

Review: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/life/books/reviews/6378531.html

I tried to find some critical reviews and what i found was a review of the author’s earlier book, Closing of the Western Mind, at http://www.bede.org.uk/closing.htm . Despite being rather critical, the reviewer does allow that, “That said, Freeman’s exposition of the arguments about Arianism and the Trinity are probably the most lucid ever written. ”

While all books have bias, and Freeman clearly has a humanist bias, i don’t find evidence that his history is completely off. The conclusion he draws from the history is arguable: his assignment of great importance to one historical event is as simplistic as any single cause argument. His presentation of the history is clear enough, though, that one may draw their own conclusions and learn much more about the Early Church from a perspective very different of the tradition passed through the orthodox church.

A number of local libraries have copies.

Another book by Freeman looks rather interesting: http://yalepress.yale.edu/yupbooks/book.asp?isbn=9780300125818

Rainy Season Begins

The first storm of the season came through the San Francisco Bay area the weekend of 23-24 October. While there were heavy rains in some places (2.71″ in Santa Rosa) Moffett Field only recorded .19″ for the weekend. The second storm followed this Halloween weekend, and is expected again to drop most of the rain in the north bay.

Before the rains began, on 2010-10-18, Stevens Creek Reservoir was at 2,264 acre feet and 72.1% of capacity. Now is a good time to brush up on the water district’s flood resources, sign up for the emergency updates, and bookmark the pages of rain and stream gauges.

Stevens and Permanente Creek Watershed Council

There is a growing collection of useful resources in the digital document repository. Uploads in October include the pilot GPS/GIS Habitat Mapping Project, the Bug Clubbers Guide, and a Coloring Book: Birds.

The Watershed Council has produced a “Final Report of Activities as required by the National Fish and Wildlife Grant” which covers June 2008 to August 2010. This document provides some very detailed data summaries in the appendices and a coprehensive summary of citizen science and outreach done by the council. The conclusion notes:

Since the beginning of the contract period in 2008, SPCWC has grown tremendously and now involves hundreds of local residents in creek events each year through its stewardship and educational outreach programs. We have an additional site for the monitoring of water chemistry and, in partnership with De Anza College, have added testing for fecal indicator bacteria and general toxicity. Our benthic macroinvertebrate study is now in its fifth year and is providing us with a wealth of information on habitat quality. Through GPS plant mapping, invasive plant removal, seed collection and small plantings of native plants our volunteers are getting a good start on riparian habitat restoration. Our educational outreach program has expanded to include leading field trips for students from three local colleges as well as visiting classrooms, organizing nature walks and participating in many local community events.

Part of the outreach includes the newsletter. From the October issue:

SPCWC volunteers recently spent four days in the field, well in the creek actually, conducting their fifth annual sampling of Stevens Creek’s benthic macroinvertebrates, more fondly known as bugs. A habitat study of this length is not something that agencies can afford to conduct and points out the importance of citizen groups such as ours. Ecological systems involve such a complexity of factors that it is only by a collection of data over many years that we can begin to understand habitat quality trends and causes. We will spend the next several months sorting and identifying what we have collected at our weekly Bug Club sessions, currently Tuesday evenings, with USGS entomologist Steve Fend. If you would like to help with this study (no experience needed) and think identifying and learning about bugs amidst “intelligent gossip” sounds like your cup of tea, please contact programs@spcwc.org.

Sneak Peek at Fish Survey

At long last fish sampling surveys are being conducted by the Water District at various locations within Stevens Creek. Work is still underway and we are not yet allowed to share specific results, but we cannot resist telling you that they have found steelhead trout in all areas sampled, including those down near the bay. Attention is often focused on the habitat value in the first four miles below the dam – an area designated as prime steelhead spawning and rearing habitat – but preliminary results are that steelhead are using the full length of the creek between the dam and the Bay.

Aquatic Bug Club: Most Tuesdays from 5:30 to 8:30 pm; McClellan Ranch Junior Museum

Habitat Restoration (aka weeding) : Most Mondays from 9:00 am to noonish; McClellan Ranch Park

Next Council Meeting: Wednesday, Dec 1; details TBA

This troubleshooting post may be of no interest to anyone but me. I’ll also update this post over the next few weeks as i document and resolve the issues i’ve seen. More after the cut.

Problem 1) Many playlists with duplicate names (in most cases repeating five times, some fewer) with the last playlist actually linking to sound files.

Searching the SD card for the name of a playlist turned them up in [CARD]/MarkSpace/Playlists/ with no duplicates.

I removed all the playlists (and music) from the card, mounted the card, and the duplicate playlists remain when i view with Meridian: all are now empty. This post claims the playlists are on a database on the device: this supports my observation.

Since i had deleted all the music from the device the “Music” app wouldn’t work at all. I placed one audio file on the device in the [CARD]/Music directory and was able to open the playlist view in the Music app. The many duplicate and empty playlists were visible with that app as well. The Music app has a menu option allowing the deletion of multiple playlists, and i deleted them all.

I reset all the Mark/Space sync settings. The configuration allows selecting playlists, albums, or artists. This may not quite be a clean start, but I can watch and see when duplicate playlists show up again, if they do.

Problem 2) In an earlier version of the Missing Sync Music plugin, one can specify file extensions that could sync. I can’t find that setting any more.

P 27 of the EVO manual says, “Note: you can use *.wav, *.mid, *.mp3, *.wma, or other types of sound files … as ring tones.” I can’t find a complete set of specs at HTC but random reviews are consistent:

Audio Formats :	MIDI, MP3, AAC, AMR, WMA, WAV, M4A
Video Playback Formats : 3GP / 3GPP, 3G2 / 3GPP2, MPEG-4

The aif files would *not* be supported, of course.

“Title” will not be transferred to the device because its file extension (mid) is not configured for syncing.

“Birdland [Live]” will not be transferred to the device because its file extension (aif) is not configured for syncing.

“Infend” will not be transferred to the device because its file extension (wav) is not configured for syncing.

I’ll write Mark/Space about this. (Ticket ID:	751697) They wrote back:

You are correct, in past versions you were able to configure specific file extensions. This will be added back in, in an update that is coming soon.

We’ve had requests to put this back in again, and it will be.

Problem 3) Despite making sure that my wake alarm was linked to the right song after reloading all the music, Alarm Clock Xtreme woke me to the default sound this morning.

I thought i reset it in the early morning, but it is showing the default music — oh, wait, that’s because the SD card is mounted. I didn’t have the SD card mounted this morning though.

I’m copying the wake music to the [CARD]/Music directory and renaming it.

Problem 4) I have recurring calendar entries in my calendar that were established years ago. Because i was having problems when i just synced events in a limited time window, i’m now syncing all events for the chosen calendars (which should encourage me to go delete the first half of the year in iCal, i expect).

Sometimes the errors look like this:

you referenced the following records (in a relationship) but did not actually push them: (

00031296,

00030855,

[lots of numbers]

00031912,

00031251,

00032017

)

Plugin Calendar did not complete.

The computer summary pane shows the last successful calendar sync was Oct 7th.

First, i’m going to print from iCal the first three quarters of the year and then delete events older than 30 days. I’m setting the “next sync action” to “Desktop overwrites device on next sync only. Even after the purge, i’m updating the Evo with 1337 records. Leet!

Starting sync with "PC36100" at 2010Oct18 9:12 AM...
Plugin Calendar starting
Plugin Calendar success
Plugin Notes starting
Plugin Notes success
Synchronization completed at 2010Oct18 9:26 AM.

Most of that time was the Calendar. Now to track how long it is until the calendar fails again.

Problem 5) Address book next!

Problem 6) Playlist Alarm by Ken Hunt

I sent this a while back, but i fear it was to a bad mail address. So i sent it again on 2010-10-20.

I think I’ve gotten the essence of the Android UI since we last corresponded in July. I had not touched my settings (one playlist with one hour plus long song) for some time, and think all seemed well after the froyo upgrade. Then I traveled and I haven’t been able to make it work since.

I set up the alarm with a playlist of the one song, and when I leave the app, I get the expect message about when the next alarm will go off. In the morning, the alarm goes off but the notification is “null playing null.” If I seem to successfully set up an alarm, when I reopen the app, the “build playlist” alert displays.

I’m on the HTC EVO. I wonder if a reinstall is needed.

Your thoughts?

The most exciting news is the Moffett Field Bay Trail Grand Opening

On behalf of the San Francisco Bay Trail Project, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project you are invited to celebrate completion of the 2.4-mile Bay Trail segment at Moffett Field

After many years of work, this much anticipated opening connects Sunnyvale and Mountain View and completes the missing link along a 26-mile continuous section of trail between East Palo Alto and San Jose. The trail opening is the culmination of years of collaboration among many different agencies and is one of several public access and recreation projects within the 15,100-acre South Bay Salt Pond Restoration Project.

The Mountain View Voice reported on the 27 July regular meeting of the Mountain View City Council (agenda). The council voted to approve highway over-crossings for the Stevens Creek and Permanente Creek trails, and the article discusses some of the financial choices. The staff report for the Stevens Creek Trail over crossing of Highway 85 is available as a pdf and has a nice architect’s visualization as well as the full analysis of heritage tree removal and mitigation. The staff report on the extension of the Permanente Creek Trail over Highway 101 and under Old Middlefield Way is also available as a pdf and also has a visualization and documents the agreement with the water district.

Another Mercury news article calls out three Stevens Creek trails for their accessibility:

Stevens Creek Shoreline Nature Study Area: This bayfront preserve, located adjacent to Mountain View Shoreline Park, offers a quarter-mile-long aggregate surface trail along a levee — perfect for bird-watching. Access to the preserve is through Shoreline Park, where restrooms are available.

Stevens Creek Trail: This trail runs for miles, almost parallel to Highway 85, in Cupertino and Mountain View, with a connection to Byxbee Park in Palo Alto’s Baylands. The trail is all paved and generally two-laned, with frequent benches. There are numerous trailheads from local streets. (For more information, visit www.stevenscreektrail.org/index.shtml)

Monte Bello Open Space Preserve: The first 500 feet of the Stevens Creek Nature Trail, beginning from Monte Bello’s main parking area, is a gently sloping segment with an average five percent grade. It takes visitors to a dramatic vista point where Stevens Creek Canyon, Mount Umunhum and Loma Prieta are visible. A bench is also located here, allowing visitors the opportunity to sit and enjoy the view. There are two wheelchair-accessible parking spaces and a wheelchair-accessible restroom at the parking lot.

Picchetti Ranch Open Space Preserve, which overlooks Stevens Creek reservoir, was also mentioned.

Happy Hari Raya! (As Eid is celebrated in Malaysia)

The Friends (Quakers) Committee on National Legislation offers a petition to publicly take a stand with American Muslims. I would sign this on principle, but i am also able to envision my brother’s family and my sister-in-law’s extended family when i think of the face of American Muslims. The vita for one specific American Muslim reads, “Professor Bush has been a visiting professor Beijing LLM program since 2005, where she teaches courses in both torts and US constitutional law. Professor Bush is also a professor for Temple Law School’s Judicial Education Program at the National Judicial Training College in Beijing, China. Professor Bush has published articles on US constitutional and comparative law, and has made many presentations on legal issues before various organizations, commissions as well as institutions both in China and in the United States.”

The petition available at FCNL reads:

I stand with American Muslims and their supporters in the Christian and Jewish faith who are planning to build an Islamic Cultural Center in downtown Manhattan.

I stand with American Muslims in exercising their freedom to gather and worship, as guaranteed by our U.S. Constitution.

As a people and as a country, we can continue this country’s project to build a more perfect union by welcoming the Islamic Cultural Center and helping it to become a reality.
