FM2005.13 colorflymail

Saturday, August 13th, 2005

I did complete the mariposa lily stamp (AS2005.04) yesterday, after much fussing with the printer. The original design was much darker, but once i had the magenta ink head cleaned, it seemed black was about to go. I lightened up the stamp, added one pixel outlines to the text, but after printing 64 of them, i realize the denomination is hardly legible. Ah, well. I did do a proof of the background image and the stamp, plus the paper airplane cancel — turned out that white was just too pale on the image.

The issue with the black ink causes a hesitation in printing for the actual mailparavion/avionparmail submission. (See address past the jump; 15 Ninthmonth d/l) I did print the almost ATC sized images needed to fill the center pane of some old formal stationary. As i used a cream colored white-out to first obscure the old name, i wondered if men ever doodled the formal married names of their intendeds. Maybe they just don’t get past “Joe+Sue.” I never changed my name, and now Christine’s matches mine.

For these small greeting cards, i put the stamp and cork cancel on the back, along with the title, date, and signature.

These eight cards, FM2005.12.01a-h, (but, argh, this should really be 2005.13) will go out to friends and family for birthdays and such. I’ve three others print outs on plain paper, a little bigger than 3×5, that i may make cardstock cards for. I still need ten to meet all the sendings for the the last third of the year, plus mail art post cards. The mail art cards definitely need to go on photo paper.

I’ve also an ATC to commemorate the new stamp: ATC2005.01.03 .

Swampgirl & MissKitty

Saturday, August 13th, 2005

On Tuesday evening there was mail from folks from the secondary nervousness condition. Miss Kitty was returning the favor of a postcard from the postcard exchange. The scan doesn’t pick up the intensity of the glossy paints she used in some places. Quite fun!

Swampgirl’s torn and woven paper ATCs were my choice in a PIF. I’d played with weaving some years ago, in this series of Interactions, Twills, and Checks. Her choices of breaking up the woven image and adding collage elements on top and nestled into the edges — particularly the smooth, arcing curves that contrast — are different than mine and an inspiration. I’ll add these to the ones HeyMaggie did in 2003. Maybe i’ll display them together….

FM2005.13 — i’ve done the digital work.

I received in today’s mail an invitation from mailparavion/avionparmail for a mail art exhibit at http://www.mecenate79.it/ . I’m sure it was the collection of addresses at, say, http://www.mail-art.de/ from which they got my address — nothing personal — but it was quite fun to get the invitation, nonetheless. The exhibition will focus on “the concepts of flight and progress as bonds between tradition and future.”

I don’t think the digital image i created — a cloud over Atlanta, taken from a plane in 2002 superimposed with a trippy butterfly ink drawing done tonight — is particularly thought provoking, but it is *fun*. I needed fun. I’ve also 20 birthday & similar greetings i need to send for the next five months, and perhaps this is the right image for that as well.

I’m thinking i should make a mariposa lily stamp. The mariposa lilly & the butterfly connection may be obscure, but i like it.

The Art of Being Nervous

Sunday, August 7th, 2005

This chunky book is the last thing i sign up for before Yule. I promise! I guess it becomes LMAO2005.03 as far as sequence of sign ups go.

Requirements:
The deadline to sign up will be August 31st.
I will accept a maximum of 40 players.
Once the sign-up closes, you will have two months to create your pages for our chunky book.
The deadline for submissions is October 31st. This means, they must be sitting on my desk by October 31st, to be included in the book…not going in the mail the day after, not “on their way”, but HERE.
There is a fee of $10.00 to help cover the cost of binding and postage. I’m sorry, but trades will not be acceptable in this LMAO.
Please enclose a return address label for yourself, to ensure there are zero mistakes by me when mailing them home!!
Please email me via pickledcherry (a) gmail.com to sign up, with the words “The Art of Being Nervous” in the subject line.

===========
Email from Sept 1:

Helllooooo Everyone!

The final total for our Chunky book is 23.

Therefore, you are required to make 23 embellished copies of your page.

Again here are the guidelines:
The deadline for submissions is October 31st. This means, they must be sitting on my desk by October 31st, to be included in the book…not going in the mail the day after, not “on their way”, but HERE.
There is a fee of $10.00 to help cover the cost of binding and postage. I’m sorry, but trades will not be acceptable in this LMAO.
Please enclose a return address label for yourself, to ensure there are zero mistakes by me when mailing them home!!
Each player creates a page, exactly 4″x4″ square and then reproduces that page (colour copies) to equal the number of players. (23)
Please use quality copying (if doing it yourself on the computer, please make sure your ink cartridges/toners are full!!) and please have your pages printed on quality cardstock NOT merely printer paper.
Each page will then be hand embellished by you, with charms, stamps, fibres, collage, whathaveyou.
Send all of your pages on to me, at which time they will be bound into a fat little chunky little very interesting book titled “The Art of Being Nervous” and sent home for your reading pleasure.

There have been several questions asked along the way, I’m going to repost them, along with answers here in this email.
If there is anything NOT addressed that you’re wondering about, PLEASE feel free to ask. I can be reached almost anywhere via email, PM, IM etc.

IS there anything special we should put on the backof our pages? Name, email addy, date, astrological sign, allergies, pet peeves?
I’m hoping that all of the artists will in fact put something on the back of their pages, but I’m not going to ask for it. I’ll come up with something for any blank pages, maybe a little stamped envelope tucked in here or there etc for keeping any Nervousness treasures in

Should we allow anything for a margin for the bindingor does the 4″ by 4″ includes the binding area?
How much space is required for the binding?
Binding on the left?
If embellishments are placed on the left side margin area will this interfere with the binding?
Your page should encompass the entire 4×4 space, however please try to refrain from embellishing along the left side….there’s about a 1/4″ margin needed. The books will either be spiral bound or comb bound, I haven’t actually decided yet. Binding will take place on the same side for every page.

do we keep the originals, and send only the photocopies (embellished) to you?
You can either keep the original, or you can send it to me, and I will (try to) put it in YOUR book.

what surface do you recommend for the original page?
Cardstock, posterboard, watercolor paper, canvas etc

Can I make all of my pages originals?
Absolutely!!

Please keep us all updated on your progress, letting me know when your pages are mailed etc.
And finally….Thank you ALL so much for joining!!! This is going to be a fantastic project!!
With great anticipation,
Jacey

FM2005.12

Friday, August 5th, 2005

Amy Kollar Anderson posted a call for art to sell as a fund raiser for the Dayton, Ohio Humane Society using “paw prints.” I’d recently taken a photo of Mr M thinking it would be a great illustration for this blog; i offered it as subject matter (wondering if they were really wanting more “fine art”). With Amy’s encouragement, i made an edition of 8 postcards with 4 artist’s proofs. The image was stretched to meet the 2×3 ratio of a postcard, run through the photoshop watercolor filter. After the proofs, the carpet & cushion colors were pushed. After assembiling the cards I added a Mr M definitive artistamp and canceled with the blue cork paw print.

I’m really tickled with how the “best wishes” message is visible and how the corner of carpet was shaped just right to hold the definitvie stamp & cancel.

I’ll mail off the four proofs (a-d) to my own correspondents; the eight in the edition will be numbered.

Call for submissions:

Is anyone interested in creating some artwork for a Humane Society fundraiser? I live in Dayton, OH and our Humane Society started the “Pawde Monet” booth at the Dayton Art Institute October Fest last year. The booth was a huge success and sold more than any other booth that year. This year they are hoping to do even better by asking more artists to participate with donations. They are looking for artwork that incorporates animal paw prints. They prefer prints from animals that were rescued by a Humane Society so they can include a story about the animal with the artwork. If you don’t have an animal rescued by the HS, your furry friend can be your inspiration.

100% of the proceeds go to the spay and neuter program!
